How to advance Australia fair

Australia, the land of the fair go, isn’t looking so fair with a widening divide between rich and poor and old and young. What’s to be done?

Episode 9

Australia prides itself on being an egalitarian society, but the evidence suggests it is a picture of ourselves that no longer holds true.

The latest iteration of the massive Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey points to a growing inequality between the haves and have nots, and the young and old. Household wealth and wages growth have stagnated, but house prices and household debt have soared.

In the latest episode of The Policy Shop, University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis discusses the policy challenges now facing us. He is joined by Professor Shelley Mallett, general manager of policy at the Brotherhood of St Laurence and a Professorial Fellow of social policy at the University of Melbourne, and Professor Roger Wilkins of the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research at the University of Melbourne, who oversees the HILDA survey.

You can read Andrew Trounson’s report on the HILDA survey here, plus use our interactive tool to see how you compare to the rest of Australia across a variety of measurements.

The Policy Shop is a monthly podcast where we discuss public policy and the way it affects Australia and the world. Hosted every month by Professor Davis, each podcast, featuring national and international guests, will examine a different public policy subject.
